WD is a good company, their drives are durable. my brother bought one (500GB) about 3-4 years ago and it's still working, never had problems so far. if you have money and need one, go for it.
as for me, i chose a different way: i bought a 750GB Seagate Barracuda internal drive for $35 and bought a case for like $6 and turned it into an external drive! if you can find internal drives for cheap, buy them and turn them into external, it's cheaper that way.

You might as well look for hard drives with USB 3.0 ports.... I bought new 1TB WD My Passport with USB 3.0 port from ebay for ~90. It has not been long so I can't say about durability, but the speed is little bit fast than USB 2.0. ( While copying 30 GB files (multiple files) from laptop to hard disk, the speed was ~16Mbps, with USB3.0, it was ~26Mbps), and ofcourse, you need USB 3.0 ports in your laptop too.

DrKancho
Can you provide me some info about how you converted your internal into external drive?
I know we need that port converter, that can be hooked into Multipin of internal hard drive and outside it has a basic USB,
Most of the time
internal hard drives need an extra power to operate. Are you using external power to run your converted hard drive or it runs just with USB connections.
I am thrifty too, thats why I want to do just like how u did.
If You do not mind can you also put the model number or a link of that hard drive and its external box?
BTW I am from houston. let me know if u need any help down here.

I am looking for 2TB portable drive like the one being discussed here. WD is good but their micro-usb sucks. I am inclined to Canvio plus, slightly expensive but very reliable.
