Nepal V West Indies

Nepal the defending Plate champion would be fighting its pride on Saturday 1st March, as this World Cup has been disappointing so far now. Despite reaching the plate final, its will be afailure if we cannot win the Plate atleast.

Nepal have good bowlers and 4 of our bowlers are inside top 12 wicket takes of the series. Paras Khadka and Raj Shrestha being the pick. Amit Bhattrai and Rahul Bishwakarma both are providing breaks in between. Paras in particular have taken 12 wickets at 11.33. He needs to fire for us to win this match.

Our batting is in disarray. We havent been able to convert our good start to good total. Middle order is not firing at all. Gyanendra Malla has been the biggest failure who just scored 25 runs in 5 innings. Paras is also struggling. We are depending in the lower order for runs. Mahesh Chetri have been better than all other. The leading scorer of the team has just an average of 25.40. We need better than this to win against team like West Indies.

Mahesh Chettri has been phenomenal with the glove. He has dismissed 14 batsman with his glovework in 5 match. Most surprisingly, 9 out of that 14 coming from stumping, which shows his brilliance.

Nepal needs to improve batting and keep on bowling and fielding as they have done against all other teams so far. A total of 230 would be very tugh for Windies to chase, given the way our bowlers are bowling.

Best of Luck boys

U-19 World Cup: Can we win West Indies in the plate championship Final?

We have created few major upsets in the last three U-19 World cup winning big guns like Pakistan and Bangladesh (in 2002), South Africa (twice!!! in 2004 and 2006), and New Zealand (in 2006 plate championship final), now this time can we stun West Indies?

Nepal is playing West Indies in Final tomorrow Saturday, March 1 (10:00 am local time of Malaysia, 2:00 am GMT).

Sri Lankan  coach Roy Luke Dias

Road to the Plate Championship Final U-19 World Cup 2008:

Nepal qualified to World cup beating spirited Afghanistan team in Asian Cup Final in 2007 by 48 runs. Nepal was placed in Group C with test playing nations Sri Lanka, Australia, and Namibia in group stage match. There were all together 16 nations (12 test playing nations and 4 nations qualified from the regional qualification) divided 4 in each group.

Game 1: Vs Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka posted the total of 236 in total of 50 overs losing their 9 wickets, while Nepal's batsmen failed to shine and got all out in playing 48.5 overs and only being able to accumulate the total of 175. So, Sri Lanka won by 61 runs.

Game 2: Vs Australia

Australia U-19s with total of 206 (Hughes 46, Pascoe 37, Khadka 4-32, Shrestha 3-32) beat Nepal U-19s 110 all out (Vishwakarma 33, Rose 3-21, Pattinson 3-25, Smith 3-25) by 96 runs. Nepal's batting line up once again collapsed.

Game 3: Vs Namibia

In this nail biting match, a patient half-century from Mahesh Chhetri, some tidy medium-pace bowling and a whole lot of nerve from young Gyanendra Malla snatched Nepal a thrilling three-run victory. Defending a total of 164, Nepal had done well to chip away at Namibia's batting order but at 142 for 7 in the 42nd over it appeared they were running out of options. That is when left-arm medium-pacer Raj Shrestha dismissed top-scorer Louis van der Westhuizen for 65 and set into motion a tense next seven overs.

Taking a gamble on 17-year-old Gyanendra Malla, who had never bowled in his first-class career, Nepal's captain Paras Khadka got it spot on. In the 45th over Malla had Pikky Ya France edging behind, and then bowled Morne Engelbrecht for 7 with the last ball of the 49th over to finish a tense contest. Nepal's grip had been administered by a tight start with the ball, tightened through slow left-arm spinner Rahul Vishwakarma's economical 2 for 23 and finally it was Malla who stole the show.

Earlier Chhetri,Nepal's wicketkeeping-opener, played a lone hand in his side's total of 164 against a disciplined Namibian bowling attack, scoring precious 62 runs for which he was awarded man of the match.

Nepal's players leave the field after their three-run win over Namibia

However, this morale boosting win wasn't enough to take Nepal to the second round as we finished third from the group behind Australia and Sri Lanka. So, once again this world cup we played for the plate championship among the eliminiated teams in the first round.

Plate Championship Quarter-final: Vs Zimbabwe

Nepal were themselves staring down the barrel at 79 for 7, before being rescued by Paras Thapa, who blitzed a 49-ball 40 and added 53 runs with Shrestha (19). They were also aided by some wayward bowling by Zimbabwe, who conceded 40 extras.

But Zimbabwe bowed down infront of discipline Nepali bowling and sharp fielding and were bowled out for mere 59 . It is zimbabwe's second-successive defeat against Nepal in world cup.

Amrit Bhattarai and captain Paras Khadka, Nepal's opening bowlers, took three wickets each as Zimbabwe were reduced to 24 for 6. Tinashe Chimbambo (20) and Solomon Mire (16*) offered some resistance before left-arm seamer Raj Shrestha nailed the last three wickets.

Paras Khadka was adjudged 'man of the match' for his all round performance.

Plate Championship Semi-final: Vs Namibia

In this re-match of group stage, it turn out to be another one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament. This match was reduced to 34 over because of unfavorable weather.

Chasing 144 run made by Nepal, Namibia were comfortably placed at 67 for 2 before a middle-order collapse swung the tide towards Nepal. Raymond van Schoor and captain Louis van der Westhuizen added 50 before Sagar Khadka got the breakthrough, and soon after Raj Shrestha removed Ewaid Steenkamp.

Paras Khadka, the Nepal captain, effected a run-out to dismiss Tiaan Louw, reducing Namibia to 81 for 5. van Schoor though was holding up one end, and his 35-run stand with Keady Strauss before Shrestha struck again. But the crucial dent to Namibia's came into in the penultimate over of the match by Rahul Vishwakarma, his two wickets all but sealed the match, and left them needing 16 off seven balls. Van Schoor perished in the final over bowled by Paras, and No. 10 Gert Jan Coetzee's 9 from four deliveries wasn't enough as Namibia fell short of their target by five runs. And Nepal secured this place in final by winning 4 runs.

Besides his two wickets and a run-out, Paras also top scored for Nepal with 44 for which he got his well deserving 'man of the match' second time in a row.

don't worry, our 9th batsman can bat better than our top ones, so don't worry if we lose early wickets.

look at other teams, they are losing early wickets as well, i guess the pitch is wet and hard to bat into, as long as the pitch doesn't dry up, we should be able to grab wickets as well.

Its pretty bad situation ...
We are defending 74 runs now...
I have no doubt that  we will only be loosing by 3\4 wickets at the best possible situation...

The batting failure again... only two bats man made score of double figure.. and the extras.. if you take our the extras from the equation.. it will be just 57 runs from the bat....

74 runs from 27 overs will be around 2.74 runs per over... had the total been around 130, the story would have been totally different.....

I wont stop wishing the team for their best.. and why not... we have few best bowlers in the team...If Paras and Amrit can utilise the moisture of the pitch, than why not...74 may be a daunting total against othe one of the best bowling side of the tournament... we just need some early wickets to stop the run flow at the start of the innings

BEST OF LUCK

I do not understand why Paras opted to bat first on such a moist pitch after the rain? Was the toss decision made before it rained?

Well, to reach Plate Championship by beating some relatively good teams is good. West Indies is just very good team. Beating the test nations like South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan in the past does not prove that Nepal has to beat them, or West Indies again.

I really appreciate how Nepalese U-19 team went to the tournament itself and performed so good despite lack of facilities and turmoil at home. I really hate to see if Paras does not get a financial sponsorship, and refrain from Nepali Cricket. We already lost good players in the past like Kanishka Chaugai and Bardan Chalise due to financial insecurity.

Soon we are going to loose Paras Khadka too. He is also planning for higher studies abroad.

The void Kaniska left in Nepali cricket is too large that it havent been filled yet after almost one n half year. Nepali cricket was pushed two year back each by Kaniska and Brdan. Same will happen when Paras leaves.

Kaniska was a solid opener, and now the senior team is struggling to find partner for Mehboob Alam.  Bardan was a hard hitting middle order batsman with good bowling skill, which could have provided batting stability to the team which have no depth in batting. Now, Paras seems to be heading away from the cricket, so Nepal will loose another genuine all rounder. I cant see Nepali cricket at senior level improving in this manner.

I do not blame any of the players leaving the country. I feel for them.

Based on the comments: The moral of the story is that:

If you plan to go for college abroad, involve yourself in a sport that you can possibly carry on through college, example soccer, basketball, tennis, etc. and possibly get full scholarship to pay for your education and at the same time follow your passion. Make yourself marketable.

If you are really passionate about Cricket then you're pretty much screwed since you were born in Nepal where there's not much meaning to this game other than a few fans, amateur players and crappy fields.
