Planing to go to Nepal next year;

Hi guys and girls, I have been thinking for a while now that I have time to think; I want to go back to Nepal and live for few months, perhaps years and maybe rest of my life depending on the situation of course. But for the start I want to go back and work there for a year or so. I don’t care about the money coz money is not everything I would like to experience working life back home, want the change of atmosphere and enjoy the homely environment.

I want to see if I can do something, change something, just wanted to give it a try, coz living here in the west and following the news and complaining is not going to do much any way.

How easy is it for me to get a job back home?
Anything special I must know about?
Any ideas and suggestion would be appreciated.

It is not bad idea to go back to Nepal for some time and see what you can do there.
Nevertheless, I belive, your academic qualification, financial situation, and friends and relative in Nepal should not be discounted when making such decision.

Personally, I do not like the idea of going Nepal , look for a job and settle down. I rather like to do something challenging- introducing some new idea or concept in Nepal which you may have learned from the US.

Dude From my personal experience.

I left HK and been living in Nepal for year and half now.

My personal experience is

1.Most of the companies dont pay you on time
2. They use like hell and throw you later
3. It depends on your family financial condition
4. Most of the ppl who has made is back here is due to family support
5. Nepal is not the place to work for other
6. It is however good to gain experience and realise there is more cunning ppl than ever
7. You should learn to go easy on your wallet
8. LIfe is good whatever it is

but again someone from society, family or wife.........may push you to go back

if you can make your wife happy with 25,000 to 30,000 with your monthly income...ok

if you cant then forget about..it...........you will suffer like me....you may hear you wife telling you to go back and she wants to settle outside. They thinks money grows in oversea, they have only seen karan johar movie where all the character are rich drive ferrari in new york, live in fine apartment.
What they dont know is the reality?

I hope these people will give you some inspiration.

bro you dont know your own country were you were born just coz u have stayed in the US for couple of years. You dont deserve to go back to Nepal.

Nepal will remain same if some people like you do not initiate to change it. There are problems, alright. If around 500 people out of hundred of thousand educated and working in western side of the glove go back to Nepal and try to change the things, I am sure it will have a big impact. It would be a very good idea to make an organization and initiate changes. I am going back to the country with a hope that I will be able to make some changes in the system. I know that it is difficult. There will certainly be frustrations and at times, I will regret. My family and relatives will ask me to go back. But still I am giving it a try. Getting a degree from one of the best US universities, if I think only of my life when my country is standing in such a juncture will be very selfish. You know what, if it does not work, you have always an option open to come back. At least give one year or so to your country. All the best!

Any idea how BA jobs are in Nepal. I am currently a BA working in one of the Financial Bank in New York and going to Nepal for a vacation next month. But I am thinking, if the situation suits, like Gurudev, to get a job in Nepal and work for atleast a year or so. Can anybody shed some lights on BA jobs in Nepal.

Thank you all for your comment guys. Bipaswai May be we should stay in contact while we are in Nepal, We could help each other, and find more like minded people, for the better change of our nation. One has to start somewhere, we just cannot keep on thinking "oh, the next will do it, why bother" that is typical Nepali thinking. I will try and get in contact with the like minded people when I am back home.

I want to tr it, even if the result will be the failure and I get no where. Of course I do not hope that, coz where there is a will there is a way.

bigtalk Gandi was also outside his country living like a westerner and their way, later he came back to India and changed the history of his country.

How about starting outsourcing IT projects to Nepal? I am sure there are a lot of Nepali here who can outsource projects if they find someone who canproperly run the business in Nepal under US terms and conditions and quility standards.

I am going back to Nepal at the end of this year... may be sooner. I have lived in US for 14 years. Thats enough. After working here for so long, I felt I didn't give anything for my society, my country. I feel there is a big void in my life. I know this sounds too idealistic. So be it. I know the risk of not having job, etc. So what. I have friends who went back after finishing his/her school in US. They are doing pretty good. Besides that, the thing I miss most about Nepal is being sorrounded by family, friends. We as a human being are happy when we are with our people. As far as work is concerned, it will come. I have known people making $100,000.00 a year in Nepal working with International Companies. (And its income tax free). These days, with advent of internet many things can be done from anywhere. I am very glad to see there are few of us thinking of going back to Nepal. We don't have to think big like: developing the country, taking the country to 21st century, etc. All we need to do is do our work... the country will develop on its own. Nepal will not stay underdeveloped and poor for ever. Its just not possible.

Having said that, I don't think its wrong for people to want to stay in West. Its your choice. If you are happy here... thats all it matters. As for me, I am happy when I am in Nepal.

i AM Here not discourage you guys.I think you can do well. I am involved with the association call AHME ( association of hotel management educators). We have recently formed the assoc. It has been only 7 months. We have brought along many institution, Nepal tourism board and now affiliated with many associations.
I know it was hard for me now, we have gained the momentum and will are here to improve education on hotel management and hospitality industry.
We have started the Food and Wine Magazine....which is popular now....www.fnw.com.np.
we are starting programmed called food and wine ko yatra for Television. it will be come out in Nepal 1 channel. We certainly are trying our best and hope to achieve a lot.
NOW to teach hotel management, it must go throw our associations training. We are introduction certificate educator training with American hotel Association.

do you want to know " how many place i work to earn 30,000 rupees a month"

7am to 8 am ......i teach +2 hotel management
10 am + 11 am.... same thing +2

from 12 pm to 1pm , i teach beverage class in Bachelors of hotel management.

2 pm to 3 pm, i teach food an beverage class for Diploma student of HOtel management

later i work as consultant for 2 restaurants in Kathmandu
i have to spare time 3 times a week for practical class in 3 colleges.

later i work for our association, T.V. and Food and Wine Magazine.....
even in Saturday, i am conduction wine certificate class which i started myself has 200 students.

so imagine...how hard you have to work here? get ready for that

somebody asked was banking job....dude, best paid job in Nepal...you may be getting like 40 thousand or start at least with 20,000 rupees

not bad to have you college or university name in your car or bike .....makes Porsche.

Moneymindead I appreciate you sharing your experience a lot. I understand that you are realy fighting for survival, like all other Nepalese living less then $20 pr. Day. Of course If you are comparing the salary and thinking about the work the west is the place.

I am very much aware of what I will be earning in Nepal, I earn about 2 – 3 Lakhs Nepali rupee pr. months at the moment, But I am not running for the money but for some thing else that makes me happy, and gives meaning and purpose in life. If I earn money to feed my self morning and evening and a beer or two in the weekends and I enjoy what I am doing then I am satisfied.

I have lived the western life and dreams, but not my own, so I also want the taste of it.

I can imagine how hard it is for you, but I am impressed by your work and effort. I my self have thought of working like that, I have even thought of giving different kinds of courses in my field (Networking, programming, language etc.) for free in my lacier time as a tuition. (Educations can open many doors for the future of our country, so why put a boundaries upon it that only the rich kids get the best education. I also wanna give chance to the poor) (I may sound crazy, and may be I am, but That is the way I like it)

Do share you good and bad experiences guys, we also need to look at the bad experience, to know where, and how things goes wrong.

It depends on your profession. I think if you are into NGOs and INGO stuff then you might make good money and if you are really interested in doing something for Nepal, you might do a good job at developing Nepal as well.

If you are into teaching, you could make a decent amount of money (enough to sustain) and also help a lot of kids.

If you already have enough money to sustain, I would recommend going to villages and doing something there.

This is a very interesting topic. What is being discussed right now is what I did 10 years ago. I graduated with highest degree with distinction in Nepal (From TU, 1995) and went to an European University. Finished my 2nd Masters and wenk back to Nepal to work at UNDP. After I went back home, I was on forceful vacation (no work) for 6 months and later worked at UNDP for 6 months. Work was cool but working there was not cool.

When contract terminiated, I simply moved to California and pretty much deserted the idea of working in Nepal. I do not regret. Main reason is unstable political/economical situation in Nepal. Everybody wants to go home, be closer with family and enjoy company of friends, celeberate social events. This comes with a price tag. Should you have an option of coming back, if things turn sour then it may be worth giving a shot. Unless you have a citizenship of a western country, it may be worth a shot. Otherwise you may have to begin with where you left.

If I was eager to help serve society, I would much better go work in Africa or Latina America and else where but I will avoid try finding job in asian coutries.

INGO won't pay you $50,000-$100,000 unless one has considerable number of service turned in. Main thing one must remember is, all these INGO's are institution for serving unemployement in their respective countries. All the budgets allocated for funding, 80% is reserved to pay salaries for the personnel from donor countries.

I do not want to be a discouraging people here but what I do want to tell, if you want to do something in Nepal, do not look for a job. This will take you no where. I am talking this from my personal experience. I am not sure what is the intent of your work, but I am open to sharing my experience. I do want to tell one interesting incident is now there is Nepalese working in various INGO's who are going to work in other countries than Nepal. Go figure if it is really worth a shot.

BEING RAISED IN FOREIGN COUNTRY HAS COMPEL ME INTO DOING SOMETHING FOR NEPAL.
