Hey we had some really good discussions going about stocks and investing in one of the other thread, but I can't seem to locate where it went.

Been really busy so didn't get a chance to update or chime in but i think u_day bro had some kind of stocks he wanted to look into? I was gonna get back to that but just got so darn busy...so hey man if you happen to read this let us know. may be we can all explore the stocks together.

these days i've been mostly looking at steel stocks because in the last 1 year, they have produce some amazing returns.

i think we have passed the information era for now and have entered the Destruction and Construction era, considering all the wars and conflicts around the world. so, if you think about it, you need steels for both destruction as well as construction. ya feel me??

holla

Thapap,
FYI there is no T anymore. T is already aquired by SBC although the Ticker T is still there. It's ironic that mother bell (AT&T) was bought by one of baby bells (SBC).

u_day jyu,
thanks for your information.

that is exact reason i put T and VZ together. before they were not even playing in the same field. VZ was too strong. and T did not have any local coverage. now T is in the same level in comparision in local, wireless. but long distance.. T still has some advantage... but they are dinosour. and as long as i get to reap their dividends i care less.

Hukka, thapap and all!
What do you guys think about Verizon (VZ)?

I did a lil research on it and here is what I got.
VZ price $33.18
The share price is just rising from its 52 week low of $29.13
Price fell by 25% in 2005
Low P/E- only 13.06
Good cash flow net income
Good dividend yeild 4.88% beats what banks are paying on savings.
(APY on savings a/c = 4.80%)
The stock looks like a freaking bargain to me.

Please let me know if you have more info or suggestion on the stock. I just want to get as much info as I can on it before buying it.

U_Day Ji,
I already sent you an email if you haven't checked. Hukka Ji, I've not looked at anything in particular, instead learning the fundametals. I'll definetly read the book you mentioned.
This was an old question from the previous post.
How are the market categoried. I hear all the time on TV with word like, Semiconductor, Blue chips, Pharmaceutical (I guess it's medical companies),Energy (oil, elctricity if I'm not wrong). Are there more?
What exactly is NASDQ,S&P,DOW? I know people trade stocks there, but beside do I need to know anything about them, how will they be realted to me if I use brokers.

If I'm bold enough to say this, which is for all of you.
Isn't this Gambling? I know you can never beat the Casinos, that's their job--to beat you and give you hope and addiction --or else they'll never be there.
What are the differences gambling and stock business which I might have never thought of. I know I'm asking too much, but just it came to my mind. Hope this doesn't piss you off.

This is uselful discussion. I've just started investing but in mutual funds, where your investment is more secure and you can get 10-12% in return. I used Ameriprise but I think these financial advisors are a big rip off so though I kicked off, I'll be doing it on my own with Fidelity using their website. Since I'm a new investor, I'm taking it slow to get the feel of it. My method is dodge all fees and only pay what's required and not fall victim to financial advisors who mostly work on commission. If you have spare money let's say 2 - 5K, I think you should buy mutual funds and invest like $50 or $100 every month to that fund during the life of the fund which could be 3, 5, 10, 20, 40 years. And if you have more spare money that you can afford to loose, gamble it on the stock market and hope for the best. You don't have to follow it closely, just let it remain and be advised of taxes which can diminish your returns heavily. The wise thing about mutual funds is that you're not putting all your eggs in one basket like you do with stocks so the risk is less.

uday,
you can call it SBC i will call it T. still the ticker is T ain't it. go it sbc.com and you will see what it says ... (O: says NEW AT&T. and by next year SBC will go away and AT&T will remain ............. . no need to quibble over name as long as you get the fundamentals.

btw, i own all the stocks i mentioned above. not in huge quantities .. since I am a poor student )O:. but i do own all of them. except PFE.

ac/dc,
i still prefer and suggest index funds like S&P 500, DOW, QQQ. for diversity . QQQ=100 DOW=30 and S&P500=500 company stocks.. so how much diversity you need hoina ta?

{ expense ratio less than mutual funds in these indexed funds}.

vontee,
difference is that
in gambling you know the odds are against you and you still gamble in the mere hope of winning. and you end up losing.

in stock market, u do have odds of winning provided that you do your homework.

i do not want to sound too pedantic but yes, i have lost tons of in 2000-2003 stock market. and I LEARNED MY LESSON. DO THE HOMEWORK AND LOOK @ FUNDAMENTALS. NOT HYPE.
but hey it was something i was not meant to have thus I LOST (O:

Thapa Ji,
True, true, true
I know when you say"Homework" it's a broad meaning. From your experience, what are the most important part of that homewrok would you suggest for newcomers like us that are very critical, so we won't make any major mistakes. We'll really appreciate if you shed some light.

Vhootee ji,

I am not pissed with your comparison of stock market to gambling. Like most have pointed out here you have a much better odd in stocks if you do your homework / research. Anything that is uncertain can be looked as gambling. Heck even life is a gamble in itself....don't know if I'm gonna live pass today or not but I know I have a better chance if I don't jump off from a cliff. I guess stock market is kinda like that too.

Now what's all this fuss about AT&T and SBC?? I had close tie when these 2 merger and it was SBC that bought AT&T but decided to keep the name, which is now new at&t. So it's kinda like Krishna Bahadur coming to America and going by Kris / Chris.

So, anyone bought anything new lately? I beleive u_day bro is holding off on VZ.

Vhootee bro, I am not much of an expert either when it come to proper name for market category. But I wouldn't let myself get too caught up in all the terminology. If you have a general understanding of different types of industry, such as construction, retail, food, clothing, finincial, service, entertainment, etc. So, I would look for different companies and their sotcks in these different industries that I think will be profitable in the upcoming future.

I beleive u_day has received your email, so hope that will help you. I don't think my email address here works, but if you have any other question why don't you just post it here as your question can be helpful for others too...and we'll all try to answer them for you.

Good luck
