And with the help of US intelligence. Wikileaks documents showed the US army was in Nepal starting May 23 2001 (just 8 days before the assasination). This was a confidential info that was shared by US military with the US Senate committee but later leaked.
Birendra was getting too close to the Chinese. The visit of Chinese President in March of 2001 and of Chinese defense minister in 2000 and 2001 pissed off both US and India. So, they found a solution.
