Does anybody know how can someone who is in H4 visa (dependent of H1b) can obtain SSN? Nursing License Board must require SSN and won't even except Tax ID Number (TIN) or anything else. Does the H4 holder still get SSN if he/she appeals in SSN office giving the valid reason of needing the SSN? Anybody in similar situation? Help is much appreciated!

Two months back I went to the SSN office to apply for my wife SSN under H4 and they clearly said H4 depedent can not apply for SSN. So all you can do is do to nearest SSN office and ask the officer a letter or proof why SSN is not given to H4 dependent and show that letter to concerned authority. Then in that case, ITIN might work.

H4 won't get SSN, they can only have TIN. But why your wife need SSN for Nursing Board? She can  take the test without SSN. She mightn't get certificate even if she passes but anyway she won't be able to work even she passes until there is new visa for nurses. For now she can finish all other process: passing test and wait for visa number. How long? nobody knows.

nursing licensing board is asking for SSN because she's physically present in the US. if she was physically outside the US, then she could use SSN Affidavit form as it's obvious that she won't have SSN anyways. i guess they don't have the provision for those who don't have SSN and have come to US as dependent. i talked to them and said we could apply but they won't give the license until my wife has SSN. were you in the same situation? can she take NCLEX examination for now? and where do you see all the news update for nurses' visas? are you waiting too for the visa?

they said we need to have SSN, and there's no exception for that. do you know if she can change her status to F1 and get SSN? how hard'd that be? anyone?

If she is in H4 visa she can convert to F1 visa... it will take 4- 6 months ..

From my knowledge, I will advise u let your H4 take the nclex from other state then transfer to Texas.
