I hear the arguement everyday, and quite frankly I am getting sick of it. What's the question you may ask. Are people born gay, or do they turn gay?

I read once that your brain fluids (I don’t know the exact name) decide whether u would be gay or lesbian. Any psychologists around?

This is not Gay thread but quite interesting Are people born gay or they turn Gay? Have you heard of term nature and nurture. Though some argue that nurture - how you raise a child the tendency to be attracted to same sex would be the reason to turn gay.I do not agree. lets say , You raise a kid (boy) in group of woman ..so what do you think ? this kid will become - attracted to woman or man??Though some external characteristics are driven by the atmosphere around .The sexual desire is a internal attribute. Some High class (celebrities) and low class(prostitution ) are influenced by external attributes but they may not be actually internally "Gay". It is nature , All human beings have both male and female attributes. You know it but as we are living in society- with norms and rules .We tend to suppress these Womanly characters in Man and manly characteristics in woman. Some come up and there you say what a "tomboy" or what a "girlyman" .Having some opposite sex attributes is not sufficient enough to label people gay. When it comes to sex - what is the preference of the individual? That is what matters. Some may realize later stage of life that they are actually attracted with same sex than opposite .Those kind of later realization come after the persons overcome the societies pressure. likewise raise a gay kid(boy) in midst of boys - send the Kid to martial arts all boys activities , send them to all boys school St.xavier's hehehe. That kid will still be gay.So nurture really didn't affect the boy's internal characteristic. But a Straight can never turn gay - if he is not internally never a gay.

ImI nah, I think I read somewhere that some hormone (balance/imbalance) decides whether you would be straight or gay. It’s less to do with nature and nurture, which was thought to be the case till fairly recently.

i agree with IMI... I circle around with loads of gays frens... both gals and guys.. not that i m one of them and siding them just happen they are my frens...... but after listening to their sideof the story.... it is true that its their own desire and choice... and nothing to do with or how they are brought up.... for an example... a guy fren of mine is brought up in strict catholic family with loads of faith, believe, prayers and the right way of bringing up as normal family... but still in the enddddddddddd..... he found that he is not attracted the the opposite sex at all so... i think it pretty much is internal..... cheers.

Oh you reminded one thing. I became scared when i met a gay recently. While i was at work one 'khaire' came near to me and said, " you are so cute". I didnt care it. But the next day when he came again and said, " i wanna be yr fren. are you a gay?" oh damn!! And i said ohhh no. Then in nepali 'ma***** rand*** ko chhora" Then he never came later. So be aware of gays. They are gay by born and very few of them are changed to that. in my opinion.

I agree with Imi, Danger and nepali_nari, that it has something to do with internal hormones or brain structure that make a person gay. In most cases, it is not a matter of choice/nurture, but the way you were born with. Parbatya, you don't have to be scared or be hostile if a gay person approaches you. You can simply tell them that you are straight. Even after you express your likings towards opposite sex and the gay person still would bother you in unwelcome manner, then it's another story -- you might have to react the way you reacted. We, who are straight, are blessed with the brain structure that goes with our body. My complete sympathies to those people who are not as lucky, and spend most of their life confused about their very own being. In addition to the confusion, we bring hatred and hostility in their lives. The social structure is such that gay folks are forced to behave as the person they are not. The social structure is such that the entire community is taught to be repellent of same sex likings, and see gay as abnormalities. Such structure needs to change and is changing over time. As far as I am concerned, I consider only one thing -- we are all human beings, and each of us deserve equal respect. Catch you later my friends! Yanx

I have heard this too my ex use to say that a lot. I donno man people have choices some make different choices. How can anyone be born gay? I mean its not like its in the genes or anything so I doubt that people are born gay. They just make a choice to be gay and hey as long as they don't hit on me they can do what ever they want. Lesbians are hott though just thought I would throw that out here sice we are talking about gay people haha. -peace-

I don't really want to believe that poeple are born gay. It's like saying alcoholism is in the gene. However, I do think that possible genetic discorders may have been playing the roll. If I am not wrong, then, why is gayness so prominent in developed countries than undeveloped countries, is it just because of society and freedom or other factors? One of my friends who works with kids foundation said that she have seen little boys who are really into boys. I don't know how someone defines gay, because in Nepali context, pretty vast group of people may fall into this group depending upon the defination. So, I think it's just more of the consequences of messed up mind than genetic structure. I will live this up to scientists to find out.

Imbalance of proper testosterone and estrogine at birth, hence "the man" and "the woman" in gay/lesbian relationships, they can't help it. Although estrogine is the chemical that makes female monthly cycle, both male and female babies have this chemical at birth. The imbalance of estrogine in brain before birth can make the boy baby gay. In other hand, excessive testastorone can turn a female baby into lesbian.

yanx21, I like your style! gus, learn something from his take on gay/lesbians. Why can't we all think like that? being gay should not be a stigma. Swatantratagaany, Being gay, alcoholizm and any other phobias can be in SUPRESSED gene. a human mind has potential to grow any phobia or addiction if stimulated.

Imbalance of hormones! Then gays should have big breats and high pitch voices, and lesbians should have moustaches and hairy legs hehe.

i just watched barbara walters program based on transgender kids. After watching i was surprised to learn that kids as young as 2 realise they are different gender and try to act different. The parents of those kids tried so hard to straighten up their identity but they finally gave up.

Like all complex behavioral and mental states, homosexuality is...neither exclusively biological nor exclusively psychological, but results from an as-yet-difficult-to-quantitate mixture of genetic factors, intrauterine influences...postnatal environment (such as parent, sibling and cultural behavior), and a complex series of repeatedly reinforced choices occurring at critical phases of development copied from http://www.narth.com/docs/bornway.html.... bhannai paryo .nabhaye yaha plagarism garyo bhanera barbad gardinachha

. Gay is a term, i think , when a man loves a man and wants to spend the rest of his life with him! A child does not know how he is going to spend the rest of his life with, and with whom! So the point of the argument is baseless! A man could turn gay, as he is exposed to his puberty and further, the sexual urge and the emotional inclination to the self gender, i suppose! The argument just does not make sense to me .. that tends to prove a child born is inclined to his gender rather than the other and he doing so, is termed a gay ? Give me a break!

Are people born gay ? Probably not, however I do believe the sex hormones abnormality after birth is one of the biggest culprit.
