RAMDEV,A SELF PAMPERED MAN
GOD KNOWS IF HE N HIS PRODUCTS N PRACTICES R GENUINE
PERSONALLY SPEAKING,I HAVE SERIOUS DOUDT ON HIS INTENSIONS
HERE IS AN ABSTRACT TO PROVE HE IS NOT DHUD LE DHULEKO

The Delhi Science Forum has issued the following statement on January 5:

THE on-going controversy regarding alleged irregularities in formulations being produced by the Divya Yog Pharmacy run by the yoga guru Baba Ramdev raises several serious issues requiring urgent attention of the union ministry of health and drug control authorities besides action by the state government of Uttaranchal.

As confirmed by the ministry of health, tests in reputed laboratories have shown prima facie violation of licensing and labelling provisions of the Indian Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940. Put simply, ingredients of the formulations do not conform to the listing on the label. This misbranding or wrong labelling itself is a serious violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, drawing a possible penalty of cancellation of license. It also needs to be further ascertained whether this is a case of manufacture of spurious products which is an even more serious offence, whether or not animal or even human material was used, as has reportedly been confirmed by some laboratories. The DSF demands that all findings by laboratories should be disclosed to the public.

Baba Ramdev also appears to be protesting too much using one argument or another whereas, if everything is above board, he should welcome a thorough investigation. He has even questioned the authority of those who collected the samples and sent them to the health ministry whereas any consumer has the right to do so under the act! Baba Ramdev and various supportive organisations have also adopted a belligerent stance, alleging that his critics are against the traditional systems or that they are in the payrolls of MNCs. The DSF and other progressive organisations have in fact always maintained that while traditional systems may be practiced, but the law of the land must be applied on its practioners.

It is incumbent on the Drug Control and other authorities to inspect the facilities of the company, test samples of all durgs produced and ascertain whether quality control mechanisms are in place. Concerned agencies of the central government cannot absolve themselves of responsibility with regard to these and related issues, and cannot simply throw the matter into the lap of the state government. It is hoped that the case will be pursued sincerely without being swayed by pressures from influential quarters.

The case highlights a number of other important issues regarding the manufacture and sale of Ayurvedic or other traditional medicines. There is enormous laxity in regulation as regards clinical trails, efficiency and standards relating to Ayurvedic medicines. Standard scientific principles and methods should be applied to this sector as is done with other pharmaceuticals since peoples health or even life depends on whether the particular product actually treats the aliment it claims to heal or causes other harmful effects. As a case in point, some Ayurvedic medicinal products were recently taken off US and European markets because they were found to contain heavy metals and other toxic ingredients. It is essential that proper standards are lad down and monitored for Aurvedic and other traditional medicines failing which dreams of promoting Indian systems of medicine both in India and abroad will remain unfulfilled.

Proper ethic as regards promotion and marketing of traditional medicines also require to be observed and concerns regarding advertising of durgs, as in the case of modern medicines, apply to this sector too. In particular, use of quasi-religious positions or platform to promote certain products is highly questionable and the authorities as well as the public need to beware of such practice.

Baba Ramdev – a quack?

Name of Baba Ramdev is getting associated with one after another controversy.

The latest controversy originates from the conflicting reports about his claims to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS through Yoga and Pranayama. Take a look at this report in which Baba Ramdev defends his claims for curing AIDS and cancer. Even his website contains similar claims, e.g., view these samples for AIDS and cancer respectively:

“On 'India TV' & couple of other TV Channels, on Dec. 22 & 23, 2006, Swami Ramdev Ji said that Yoga Pranayama & the Aurvedic & Herbal Medicines suggested by him can control & cure AIDS. He added that the CD4 Cell count of the people affected by AIDS, which had fallen to 50; 100; 150 have gone up to 400; 500; & even 600, which is quite normal. He added that even the people with CD4 Cell count of 5 to 10 have benefited. CD4 cells (T4 count, T-helper cells) are a class of immune cells that gradually get depleted in HIV infection.”

“Quoting from page 55 of the monthly magazine "Yog Sandesh" (English) September 2006 issue, of Swami Ramdev Ji's Trust in India, "Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev while addressing the people said that Yoga & Pranayama have been successful in curing 200 cancer patients and he is ready to give evidence. The ancient science is also beneficial in case of AIDS and experiments are being carried out in that area. He would make formal announcement once the tests are completed". Swami Ji said, "Till now I have completed more than ten thousand scientific experiments. The patients of diabetes, obesity, hypertension, depression, can take part in the seven-day camp and check the results on their own. They will notice 50% improvement within a week".”

On the other hand, there are opposite reports such as this and this, wherein Baba Ramdev is reported to have stated that he never made a claim to cure AIDS and cancer through Yoga.

A couple of days back, calling Baba Ramdev a quack, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) accused him of misleading people about the cure of life-threatening diseases. According to IMA National President Ajay Kumar, people were dying at the Baba Ramdev’s camps and were being administered 'wrong medicines'. “People who do not belong to any of the four streams of medicine approved by the Government of India are quacks.”

The latest reports now suggest that with the IMA dubbing Baba Ramdev a quack, the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) has now backtracked from conferring an Honorary doctorate on him during the University's annual convocation in March, 2007.

The problem is that Baba Ramdev has been quickly adding one after another disease on his long list (which now has about 140 diseases) curable through Yoga and Pranayam; but the scientific evidence is lacking and no trials are conducted in an independent and scientifically verifiable manner. His desire for more and more publicity is adding fuel to the fire. Moreover, the increasing financial interests in his sprawling business from herbal medicines and other Yoga related products (CDs, etc.) are bound to further add to the controversies.

Controversy

[edit] Minimum Wage
In March 2005, about 113 workers employed by the Divya Yog Mandir Trust, Kankhal, Haridwar, owned by Ramdev, started an agitation for minimum wages and for coverage under the Provident Fund and Employees' State Insurance schemes. At a tripartite meeting, an agreement was reached between the workers, management and the district administration. But, some agitating workers were dismissed by the Trust after being charged for alleged sabotage. Their case was taken up by a trade union controlled by Communist Party of India (Marxist); they are yet to be reinstated.[6][7]

[edit] Allegations of unhealthful Manufacturing Practices
Building on the labour demands, New Delhi based Brinda Karat, aCPI(M) leader and wife of CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat, called a press conference alleging unhealthful manufacturing practices in the pharmaceutical company. She also accused the pharmacy of using animal and human parts in the manufacture of their ayurvedic medicines. Though ayurvedic texts allow the uses of such substances in the manufacture of some of the ayurvedic medicines, this violated, according to Brinda Karat, the laws related to proper labeling of medicines. [citation needed]

[edit] Use of Bones in Medicines
The controversy reached a flash-point in January 2006 when Brinda Karat produced an Indian health ministry laboratory report that she claimed found that Divya Yog Pharmacy, owned by Ramdev, was using human and animal bones in his medicines. She also claimed that a sample of the medicine (Kuliya Bhasm and Yauvanamrit Bati, purchased from Brahmakalp Chikitsalay, which is the Trust's hospital at Haridwar) was tested at government labs which later confirmed the presence of animal materials in the sample. She exhibited the prescription and cash receipt obtained from the medicine counter in support of her claim.1

[edit] Rebuttals
The charges were denied by Ramdev and his followers who accused Brinda Karat and the CPI(M) of being agents of multinational pharmaceutical companies.

Four samples sent to the government-recognized research center (Shriram Institute of Industrial Research, Delhi) were reported as indicating that the medicines contained no objectionable ingredients and were purely herbal. Uttarakhand state Health Minister Tilak Raj Behad announced this to BBC in March 2006[8]. This refuted Karat's claims that Ramdev was part of any wrongdoing. Ancient Ayurvedic texts do, at times, proscribe the use of animal materials.

Many Indian right wing politicians like Sharad Pawar, Mulayam Singh Yadav, and Ambika Soni came out in support of Ramdev's promoting Yoga and Ayurveda.[9]. The BJP said that they were "fully with yoga guru Swami Ramdev"[10].

[edit] Comments on Mahatma Gandhi
Swamiji commented in Jabalpur, where he was imparting yoga training to Army personnel, "See, I am a follower of penance, sacrifice, non-violence and truth. But I am also a follower of revolutionaries. I live a simple life. I don't do what everyone else does. But I believe that the freedom of our country is because of the sacrifice of martyrs". "If somebody says that the country achieved independence without arms, without bloodshed, I believe that is an insult to the country's martyrs". These statements sparked a rage in Gandhi's followers, mainly activists of the Congress Party. They charged Ramdev with insulting the Father of the Nation. Youth workers of the Congress burnt posters of Ramdev and shouted slogans against him.[11]

[edit] Claims of curing AIDS and cancer and confrontation with Health Ministry
Press reports in December 2006 created further controversy by stating that Ramdev had made claims that Yoga could cure AIDS. Ramdev responded by saying that these reports were misrepresenting him.[12] His position was that Yoga and Ayurveda together can alleviate the suffering from AIDS, not cure it.[13] Other press reports state that he has claimed that cancer of the breast, liver, prostate, uterus, pituitary gland, brain tumours and leukaemia, could be cured by practicing the seven breathing exercises and that he had documented proof of his successes.[14] Ramdev has not denied the allegaton by critcs that setting up of several million dollars worth export business and claims of miracle powers is done with the support of 'selected admirers' from whose statements he himself has distanced now in order to escape from legal actions.

A website promoting his products states that the CD-4 cell count in some AIDS patients has improved after practising Yoga.[15] This statement was translated by certain journalists as stating that "Swami Ramdev claims cure for AIDS".[16] As a consequence of these press reports he was sent a notice by the Union Health Ministry and threatened legal action from medical NGOs.[17]

In response to the cease and desist order from the Health Ministry, he categorically denied that he had made any such claims and said that yogic education was more preferable than sex education in response to the AIDS crisis. "Sex education in schools need to be replaced by yoga education. The government should stop polluting the minds of innocent young children with sex education. Society's morality cannot improve with teaching sex education in schools. And AIDS cannot be prevented by talking free sex and by using condoms."[18]

so what?? You can atleast beleive in 'YOGA'.
Yoga’s primary emphasis is upon general well-being. Although yoga has been shown to be beneficial in a variety of conditions, it is not considered a therapy for specific illnesses. Rather, yoga employs a broad holistic approach that focuses on teaching people a new lifestyle, way of thinking, and way of being in the world. In the process, however, it is also found to bring a myriad of healing effects. By attending to practices for improving, regaining or retaining general good health, a person is likely to find that some of his more specific difficulties tend to disappear. Many of the healing effects of yoga is clinically verified. We have to look at the healing effects of yoga. However, one of the most important benefit of yoga is its application in relieving stress, fatigue, invigoration and vitality and its anti-aging properties and its application for relaxation therapy.

Practice YOGA--- Feel fitter, be more energetic, be happier and peaceful!!!

Mr. Bikash,

Many of your citations above flaunt your own claim ' I am not against Yoga'. Will you reread above postings by you and try to think you were right in your claim.
In your 'controversy' postings above you have just posted excerpts that will help promote your vested interest of defaming yoga Guru Ramdev. You say ' he defamed Gandhi by saying that the actual revolution and bloodshed by various martyrs had contributed in making India independent from the British clutches' . Do you really disagree with this claim ? Gandhi was given all this credit by the Britishers because he did not physically harm the Britishers and their interest.

Ramdev may be aggressive, arrogant and firebrand in maintaining his views, but you can not deny the fact millions of people have benefited from his popularizing this ancient art of physical and mental exercise . I have noticed my own relatives who used to suffer from diabetes and hyper tension getting over the ailments by throwing away the medicines they had been taking for a couple of years. Their situation has improved to normalcy for the last one year after they came back attending a one week camp in Haridwar in India and maintained the same discipline as well as the prescribed exercises back home in Nepal.

It is therefore advisable for you shut your mouth up ! If you are not interested , it is your right not to admire or be a follower of something. But you better find out a plausible reason not to be critical of each and every good other people may consider worth having and taking.

if you have proof, better come up with them to justify your proselytizing.

This is a pathetic situation in Nepal... Nepalese populations are turning into Indian Babas' bhaktas day by day. Why? People in Nepal have lost hopes... and think that the babas at the south border could help them out from their miseries. Whom to be blamed? Babas? Definitely NOT. It's the problem of poeple, Nepalese people... because Nepalese people are not capable of taking care of themselves, physically, chemically, spiritually, whatever. That's why the Nepalese people themselves created their leaders like Girija, Makume, Prachanda, Baburma, Deuba, Khum Bahadur Kadga, Govinda Raj Joshi, Sherchan, Oli.. you name it.. all these leaders are puppets of India. Politicians of India are treating Nepalese polticians like their pets, like bears of chatke. And Nepalese poeple are succumbing to Indian Babas.

Nepalese are being made slaves of India in every rrespect these days.. look at sajha... these days, more than half of the threads are about Indian Idols. Participants of Indian Idol coming to Kathamndu. Baba Ramdev is coming to Kathmandu, then his yoga camp in Ratnapark is being cancelled to politicize it. C'mon can't you see how Nepalese people are being slowly brainwashed and transformed into indians as such? Mennon visits Nepal... then all politicians must go and meet that Menon, why? This is all bullshiit.

And I regret that most of Nepalese political leaders are bahuns like me. They are spoiling otgher leaders as well. One day all will be like bahuns in Nepal.

Nepalese are to be blames for the mess in Nepal. Nobody else. I think a country can get the leaders as good as her people.

Dhanyabad.

Bikask KC;
I dont disagree that he is also blend in controversies and conspiracies. Who isn't? After all he is a celeb too. I am sure the doctors of India and Nepal who practice western medicine are finding him as a serious competitor and try to defame him. People are not following him because of religious reasons; his yoga has proven beneficial to thousands of people. So, why wouldn't poeple practice it. Wouldn't you avoid taking the chemicals in your body if at all possible?
