Scholars barred from leaving Kathmandu
KOL Report
KATHMANDU, March 26 - Professors of Tribhuwan University (TU) were Friday restricted from boarding a plane bound for India at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
Professors Dr Lokraj Baral, Krishna Khanal and Political expert Dr Krishna Hachhethu returned back from the airport after securitymen told them that they were not allowed to travel abroad.
The trio were to attend a program in the South Asia-level talk program in Goa.
?If we are a threat to the state, we ask the state to imprison us,? Dr Baral said, adding, ?if not, why we are being treated this way??
He also claimed that professionals should not be treated like politicians. ?We are not advocating any political doctrines,? he said.
?The action of the state to bar academicians from travelling is cruelty,? Hachhethu said. ?The state may stop us physically from travelling but such practice won?t bottleneck our brain.?
Previously, Dr Baral had been arrested from the TIA upon his arrival from New Delhi on February 7, 2005. He was detained for 18 days and later released following immense pressure from national and international communities. (dds)
