It is not about "availability" it is about respecting your own culture, your parents and ancestors.

Well well, respect to individual's choice; I for one belief in slow evolutionary modifications one at a time. Speaking one way meat regardless of what is the source will bear the same sin, but the bigger question is are we ready! I mean is all our body prepared to gulp in those foreign proteins that none of our ancestors may had introduced into their body. Protein in milk, some Jha's theory that early Sub-continental civilations used to consume beef do not convienence me to admit that evolutionary I am ready to consume it. Looking at BSE, it is a prionic disease, small proteins that is unrecognized by the body, there is this recent one associating red meat with increased incidence of cancer and other associated diseases. However, having said that it is again all upto an individual, as for my evolution reached upto; from grandparents to now; Veg-Cheavon--buff,chicken,pork--?

A nepali guy, dressed up in HIP HOP uniform, with a bling bling around his neck, jeans that were barely hanging and fast falling from his thighs, completely SHAVEN head comes up to me and says " malai yo chai man pardaina. jata gaye ni afno culture ta chadnu hudaina ni"

Well, well, let's not attack Sayami jee just because he has expressed himself honestly. At least he does not hide behind "culture". When I quoted someone mentioning difference between American cow and nepali gai, it was just a jest. Whether you eat something or the other, or whether you are vegetarian or not, it's just a matter of choice and not culture. Change in culture is an ongoing process, the changes never stop. That's my personal belief. I am not saying everyone must agree with me. But there are some points to ponder upon. Wasn't it a Hindu culture to let (or even force) widows throw themselves into fire as "sati pratha"? Wasn't it a Hindu culture not to eat chicken? Wasn't it a Hindu culture to regard and worship the king as an incarnation of Vishnu? Speaking of culture, how often do we see "gaijatra" on the streets on the day of gaijatra? The number has certainly gone down What happened to the lakhe dance that could be seen in every tole of kathmandu after nag panchami? How many bahun chettris in America (or even Nepal) still have a janai, a tuppi and know Gayatri mantra by heart? And culture कै कुरो गर्ने हो भने every Nepali should throw away our jeans and t shirts and wear daura suruwal bhoto and kachhad only. I am not a scholar. I am not a "buddhijeevi". I am just a simple man who has preserved whatever Nepali "culture" I feel comfortable with and discarded the rest to keep up with the changing times. I rest my case.

I agree with you dautari...all the people who acts like preserving culture by not eating cow should also preserve all kind of things you are writing.....behaviour and habits changes with the time and place....

. I tried everything in my life what other people in other culture eat. I have been to 20 different countries because of my job, study and training. I love to experience other culture as well. I do not have any restriction inside me and I am very open to tell the truth.Specially like when I was in red indian reserve camp in Oklahama I lived there exactly like they do. It is a great experience. What makes a human being to eat certain animals? It has a reason to eat or not to eat certain meat. Nature has designed all this. There are man made artificial reason what prohibits certain meat to eat or not to eat. These are mainly religious reason. I do not know exactly why Brahmin are not allowed to eat beef or waterbuffalo. But they mostly perhaps some do not eat those animals too. They do drink Budweiser or Tequilla or Johnie Walker. Do n´t they? Please tell me the truth: Specially the friends living in America! Who has not eaten a hamburger or momo stuffed with thulo khasi ko masu yet? If not why? Do not you feel like you are a non smoker and flying in a aeroplane with full of smoke from somokers behind your seat? Can you claim now that you are still a non smoker? .

Cultural values are personal values that we learn from our society and ancestors. It is up to us to preserve those or to abandon those. Preserving our values defines our future. The values that you preserve today will help future generation to understand their roots. Have you heard of cultural crisis? Identity crisis? These emerge when we defy our own values that our parents taught us. There are tribes and people who eat dead cow in Nepal (died with natural causes). That does not mean we eat what ever we want. We are the ambassadors of our country and culture we can be a good ambassador or a bad one. There are people who will have no problem eating dogs, rats, crows and the most disgusting food there is, on the other hand what most of us think disgusting is delicious to them. If they are happy with their food let them be.
