As far as I can tell "we are alone" :-) There are no known human or intelligent civilizations other than earth. Let us put this idea in universal perspective, there are billions of stars and galaxies, solar systems and planets, yet there is only one little planet where intelligent life form exists. Don't you think that makes us special? :-)

If you are really interested in the subject you should read the book by Carl Sagan - COSMOS. You can find the book in Discovery stores or in your local library. He also made a documentary based on his book.

SHIVji, I love CARL SAGAN.I have both read his book and watched the series.COSMOS was the most popular documentary ever played on public channels. The viewer's record hasn't been broken yet. I am sure you know about his son who is a buddhist monk. But thanks anyways. Keep wondering.....

izen, You have watched and read Carl Sagan! I am impressed. :-) Are you seeking the answer to your question based on science or on mythology? Unfortunately you have to pick one or the other...

Shivji, Oh please are you saying I would endorse the "genesis" theory.Absolutely not.I am looking for an answer that is supported by science. If we are lucky we might find out within our life time. Back to Carl Sgan. The movie Contact with Jodie Foster I am sure you know about it.The series about expanding universe and black holes based upon theories of Stephen Hawking is equally fascinating.Hence, I have chosen science:)

Huh Me Buddhist ? When did that happen ? huh !!! thought I wus yiddish( Cause Ahh like their hair style) ..he he Because of theory of relativity we are limited to what we know today(where the universe is limited). But untill the Black holes and the worm holes are explored we shall never know what's really out there. String theory sounds interesting and promising. But have not doen enough reading on it to discuss(except see the documentry on it). Now thats' ma 2cent(not fitty)..he he

izen, please do not call me "ji" that title feels heavy for me ;-) I hope some discoveries (hopefully in our lifetime) will reveal intelligent life form somewhere in the distant galaxy but who knows it might take just as long as we can count. I am not an astronomer (so far) but fascinated more by the universe than the planet we live in. I just wanted to be sure what you are looking for since you asked for a "buddist" view. As little as I know about buddism the answer to every question (even the universe) lies within, so here you go my friend search within .

Yep as they say THE LORD GIVETH, THE LORD TAKETH..he he As the famoose Confucious said if there is a begining there will be an end(but not 'bout to happen in our lifetime, so stop wondering pondering and live your life, go get a drink and celebrate, or even get laid). he he but the existance of 5th dimention is right here present in this world. Its all about perspective. You can see it unfolding raight in front of your eyes. he he

Well I am already in the quest to search within.I wouldn have chosen some other belief than Buddhist philosophy if that wasn't case.Cosmic wonder fascinates me equally but isn't the whole universe directed towards us than the other way around. So inner exploration is the ultimate answer. Was trying to find others opinions on that matter as as well? So :)
