I just wonder how many PhD holders/students are the 'yatri' of sajha. I think, we have a good number of Nepalese origin PhDs in sajha and some of them are-Nepe, Ashu, Isolated freak, O.K. I may not be necessarily talking about forming a doctoral club in sajha but sharing our experiences related to our field may help us academically and professionally and most importantly it may give us a rough estimation of doctoral Nepalese Diaspora.
I am looking forward to your opinion.

""according to my indian friend PHD means PAGAL HONEKA DAWAA (Ookhati)"
Usofa, dawwa (okhati) ho ke dawa (declaration) ho, je bhai pane PhD is a process of narrowing your knowledge to get deeper in a specific field. One thing i have found of these PhD walas (not all ofcourse, but majority) is "afno damphu afai fukne", my research, my topic is the best attitude. It is obviously the training of presenting the work, discussing it and defending it that gives expression to such attitudes. But anyway, aba kasaile te padhnu paroy ne.
Heard the enrollment of PhD students in the US is on a decline, any idea where the scenario is heading to? What is the distribution of PhD fraternity among Nepalese, region wise in the global context. Anyone doing PhD on the status of PhD holders of Nepal, their specific area of research, universities, publication, fame and success, commitment to serve and actual contribution to the motehrland.

Nutji,
Thanks for starting this thread. It is very interesting to see diverse comments about PhD. It is surprising that my research project is very similar to yours. I am in the cell and developmental biology area and focusing on cell migration in embryos especially how cells migrate through polarized epithelium, which is very important process during development, immune defense and metastasis. We use live imaging, Drosophila genetics and cell biology to address this issue. We have just found a gene encoding a novel G-protein coupled receptor required for this process. Currently trying to find out the signal for this receptor and downstream cascades. Hoping to finish in a year or so.

AKunwarji,
Neuroscience is pretty fascinating. I liked your project and have been thinking of doing Neurodevelopment after finishing graduate school. Let us see. It is pretty amazing that how little we know about ?Structure and Function of Brain?. Good luck to you.

Diabesityji,
I think I know you and am glad that you are still continuing pretty exciting stuffs. Good luck with everything.

Oys bhai,
I was getting rumors about your graduate school thing. Congratulations and Good luck to you.
Himal

Doing DBA, I don't know whether in US it is considered equal to Phd. In Europe and Australia it is emerging as very popular and equal to Phd.

Cheers

Even with the stress I had/have, I'll admit now that I'm actually having a quite good day in my work , so my advice to prospective PhD people is - go for it.{this advice changes on a daily basis)

Oys, good luck with graduate school. By the way, which school will you be attending? My suggestion for grad school is - make sure you choose your advisor and the group you will be working with wisely. How much funding the advisor has so that you have to do as little TAing as possible and focus on your research. Next thing, make sure the other people in the group are happy and amiable. And, of course, you have to make sure that research is interesting.

Fortunately for me, I have been lucky choosing the advisor. I should be outta here between 6-10 months..:).

It looks like all of the above Phd candidates/holders are leaning toward cell biology/genetics. As for me, I am working toward developing nanosensors using silver or gold nanoparticles.

The original question to this thread was " HOW MANY PHDS IN SAJHA? " not "WHO ARE THE PHDs IN SAJHA?" . Therefore, if you know how to answer this question, please be specific.

I try to get the specific answer for this thread. There are total 5229 topics initiated so far in Kurakani. Having guessed with over estimation, in relation to the total posting, there might be around 1000 members, if the minimum posting per head is 5. As all of the people who are subscribed to Sajha are students or minimum literate, the number of Ph.D. holders could be roughly 100?? As I know there are many members with Ph.Ds, who doesn't like to call themselves as Ph.D. Because they know what it is for them. While there is more puffing by the ongoing Ph.Ds.

But what is the difference having Ph.D. and being genius? In my opinion, just having Ph.D. certificate, it doesn't lift ones attitude and way of thinking. For this, one needs brain and talency. Of course, it doesn't mean to ignore that Ph.D. is the pass or ticket for the Academic gateway. One needs broader vision and analytical capability than to be just a Dr.Saheb.
