Part VI
November 2009
“Mom, can I come to the movies with you and daddy? Please??” Five years old Mili came running as she was getting ready. She gave a quick smile at her husband; he could tell she wanted him to answer for her. “Oh sure honey, let’s go get dressed while mom finishes hers and then we will all go have a good time”, he picked little Mili up and walked out of the room.
As Sheila turned back at the mirror to finish her touch ups, she couldn’t help thinking how blessed she was to have such a wonderful family, the most thoughtful and loving of all husbands any wife could ever ask for and their precious bundle of joy! After a tough day at work, she had two beautiful smiles waiting on her that would instantly work to relieve her exhaustion. Her husband was all ears anytime she wanted to share any of her stories, from Gary being promoted, to David retiring, to Michelle having an affair with the IT guy. He could tell if she had a bad day at work without her even looking at him, she need not explain to him that her feet hurt, she need not remind him of her allergy, she need not ask him for his help, he would know about it before she even thought of summoning him; someone who seemed like would never get tired of loving his wife. He was one of the best things that happened to her, her best friend, her guardian and the best person who could have fathered her beautiful child.
“Momma, are u ready yet? Lets go momma, lets go”, she was suddenly interrupted from her epileptic state with her daughter’s ahoy from downstairs. “I m coming honey”, she said as she grabbed her purse and winked to herself at her final glance in the mirror. “You look wonderful tonight”, said her husband as he gave her a quick peck!
“Alright, so we going for dinner and then to the movies, does that sound alright?”
“Yes Daddy”
As they headed to the movies after a great dinner, Sheila could feel a tremendous vibe that night, for some reasons unknown. It just did not seem like it was because of their anniversary alone. She was a successful lady, a great mother and a happy wife now. Gone were the days when her troubled past hurt her emotions. She had wasted enough of her lifetime trying to cherish memories of something/someone long gone. 10 years is indeed a long time! In fact, she now felt she hardly has any time to dwell in that misery. Whenever she went down the memory lanes, she learned only to explore the good part, the part that taught her to respect honesty, the part that taught her to respect love, and the part that taught her to respect devotion. She was rather quite on the road that night, busy thanking her destiny and the great Almighty for what she had been blessed with. She had thrived through thorny roads and now she had everything any modest human would wish for!
As they were about to enter the movie hall, Mili asked for some pop-corn.
“Let me go use the wash-room, while you guys go get some pop-corn. We will meet here”, said her husband. Sheila nodded and took Mili to the theatre hot-dog store. As they waited in line for their turn for the pop-corn, “Heyyy Stranger” a familiar male voice was heard from behind them. There was a different, but familiar aura in that voice. The voice that once boggled her mind and travelled deep down her heart. Forgiven but not forgotten! She couldn’t abstain from ignoring that call. She instantly turned around, just couldn’t resist!
“Hie, there”
“How’ve you been Sheila?”
“I m good…….good. How’ve you been?”
“Pretty good myself… been a long while eh?”
That simple statement hit her hard, forced to remember both the good and bad things she went through, the happiness she shared and the sorrows she endured. She felt as if it was trying to scratch the scar that had barely healed, as if it was teasing her, and all that she did to retain the relationship she cherished for life. Over-reacting in a way, justifiable in many!
A gentle grab of her index finger by Mili brought her back to reality. Sheila smiled at her and then looked back at Burpy.
“You alright, Sheila?”
“Yea, yea… I m fine, thanks”
“You know it’s been so long, I almost forgot you”, he paused.
Sheila smiled back and said, “Don’t worry, you will!”
As she said that, she mustered up courage to look directly into his eyes, she saw his eyelids flutter. She felt like it touched him this time, touched him deep down inside. It probably did woo him for the very first and the very last time in both of their lifetime!
