Who are the Gurkhas? Let's discuss anything about the Gurkhas here in this thread. Can put up pictures and video that will add more interest to the people and help to those who are presenting about these unique elite frighting force from Nepal. One of my American student was overwhelmed by the total dedication of the Gurkhas he met them in Iraq and in Afghanistan when he was sent to the mission.
He told me that he had never met such perfect soldier in the world.

Here's a video of these Gurkhas fighting the Taliban.

The present Gurkhas are foreign mercenaries prepared to die for money for their foreign masters .

But the Gorkhalis 2 hundred years ago were great, ignorant, innocent, loyal patriotic  fighters who fought against the British invaders. So , I have no respect for  a Gurkha but  love and salute a Gorkhali .

indeed crazyhorse bro, it is their sheer professionalism, discipline and bravery that has made a name 'legendry' gurkhas which no other combatant units has earned. some people are pathetically trying to demean gurkhas as foolish infantry and that is what made them brave, that is utter hypocrisy n stupidity themsleves. 200 years of service, all major battlefronts of the world, comrades who were brothers in arms, many book authors, historians, 4 major nations that hire gurkhas(uk, india, singapore and brunie) and even praises from enemy can never be wrong to prove them as one of the fine infantry unit in the world. now ex servicemens are building a gurkha memorial park in bishnu padhuka, dharan, it would be intersting to see n participate all ex gurkhas in a parade with thier distinguish paltaan and insegnia in 'purkhas diwas' which is organised every year all over the world that has considerate number of gurkha population namely hong kong, malyasia, UK, etc. also, they have a plan to build a memorial in kathmandu with the soil brought from every front of the world where gurkhas fought n bled.

sumedhu bro, every hired professional soldiers fight for money. stop paying them, they will leave immediately n desert u.

A nice article written by

Lt Col Surendra Singh Rawal of Nepal Army under the heading

"THE GORKHAS: A BUSINESS OF

BRAVERY, LOYALTY, AND DISCIPLINE"

regarding gurkhas, its history, legends and most imporatantly why they are not 'merceneries' but highly seeked professional soldiers from public to private sector.

The Gurkhas are normal men who fight for Britain. Theres nothing wrong with that, many thousands work in foreign soils scattered across Malaysia, the UAE and India already so theres nothing wrong with being a soldier for a country that is not yours. Besides when the Gurkhas become a gurkha they dont automaticcaly forget their identity, if they had then they wouldnt be called a Gurkha.

This much is evident: tendency to criticize and denigrate the Gurkhas tend to come out of sheer jealousy and "khutta tanney prabriti" from certain quarters of Nepali society.  Best to ignore these fools.

some questions.

when did the british started recruiting the Gurkhas into their army?

why did the Nepalese government signed with the british that permiited the british to recruit the Gurkhas in the first place?

we all know that several thousands of Gurkhas never reurned home after the WWI and many came home crippled and injured.

so why then Nepalese government did not stop the recruitment of the Gurkhas into the foreign army?

the Nepalese government could have prevented more Gurkhas from dying in the unknown land but instead allowed these men to fight in WWII which was more deadly than the first.

why did the Nepal government instead did not give these men a job in the Nepal army but allowed them to be recruited and fight for others interest?

regards,

crazyhorse

try reading the article from the above link, it is huge yearly document of Nepal Army but it has many answers of your questions. there are many reasons regarding nepal gov allowing her young citizens to get recruited in foreign army. in first and second world war aprox 400,000 gurkhas voluntereed for the great war and nepal gov provided the assistance of nepal army itself primarily for support role. well, first is economic factor, rana government were receiving 5 pounds per gurkha recruited in great wars and yearly royalties. another reason could be to strenghthen the relationship between two nations after anglo nepal war which was given more priority in rana regime. many gurkhas chose to stay in some foreign countries when they were in a war, many r still living in assam, burma, malaysia. recently malaysian gov even honored this fine men by giving land n house for thier service in quelling communist rebels. my grandfather marched in the street of japan after allied victory over japanese in WW2

Is there anyone here in sajha who can speak German or from Germany?
Watch how Hitler react when he heard that Gurkha unit was among the Allied forces advancing the German front.

This is what i learned.

Hitler said in his biography "if he had Gurkhas then he can win all over the world" he went further " there is nothing in the world I scare of but Gurkhas".
Hitler had seen the Gurkhas fought against the German troops when he was a soldier in WW1.

"If anyone says he's not afraid of dying, he is either lying or he is a
Gurkha." - On the Indian Army's Gurkha Regiment.

famously said by Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji
"Sam Bahadur" Jamshedji Manekshaw
, he was the first of only two Indian military officers to hold the highest
rank of Field Marshal in the Indian Army (the
other being Field
Marshal K M Cariappa
). His distinguished military career spanned
four decades and through five wars, including World War II.

Here's how the Khukuri is made and some history of Gurkhas.
The narrator said at the video 1.38 that it was the Sikhs and the Gurkhas who maintained the loyalty
to the crown. Actually what was this Indian mutiny about?

dude, indian mutiny is also known as first war for indian independence. theres one hindi movie too played by ameer khan based on intial incident and tensions that led to the mutiny. one of the major reason was use of cartridge in pattern 1853 enfield rifle, the standard issue for the rifle was greased with pork fat and beef fat and as to load the rifle the soldier had to tear of that part by his mouth which was unclean for both hindu and muslim sepoys. gurkhas compromising of mostly gurung, magar, rai and limbu clan had no problem with either of the fat, beef was widely consumed in eastern nepal. also, janga bahadur rana himself commanded the nepal army as a furthur support to british in quelling the mutiny. as a reward for loyalty and freindship nepal got back some of her lost land in anglo-nepal war, bardiya and surroundings.
