Dozens of Nepalese workers missing from Ala. plant
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- About 100 people who came from Nepal to work at a north Alabama factory seemingly vanished from a pair of apartment buildings, along with a lot of furniture and appliances, and can't be located, officials said Tuesday.
Immigration agents are trying to determine what happened to the Nepalese workers, among hundreds brought to the United States to work at a DVD factory operated by Cinram Inc., said Lauren Bethune, a spokeswoman for the Alabama Department of Homeland Security.
"We do not in any way consider it a security threat, but we do think it is important," she said.
A Huntsville television station, WAAY-TV, first reported on the missing workers.
Cinram's human resources director, Peter Hassler, did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment. But a spokesman for a company that recruited the workers for Cinram said a contact in Nepal believes many of them have returned home.
"Most of the people he was talking to said they came to America, did what they wanted to do and went back home," said Doug Wilson, president of Ambassador Personnel in Thomasville, Ga. "These are people with pretty strong family ties."
Mary and Tim Snopl told the TV station they rented apartments in two buildings last fall to about 240 workers from Nepal. But Mary Snopl said scores of the workers are now missing, along with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of furniture, televisions and kitchenware.
"I don't know if they're living in Huntsville or somewhere else, I just know they aren't living with us and they aren't working at Cinram," she said.
Wilson said his company was seeking a list of items believed to be missing.
Reports last fall said Cinram had hired about 1,350 foreign workers to package DVDs at its plant in Huntsville. Cinram - which describes itself as the world's largest maker of pre-recorded multimedia products - said it turned to foreign workers because the area job market couldn't fill its needs.
Bethune said about 100 immigrants were believed to be missing. Agents are trying to determine exactly what type of visas they used to enter the United States.
"It's possible that they had work visas, they expired, and they went home," she said.
The workers can earn $8 an hour working 12-hour shifts packing DVDs in boxes. Besides Nepal, Cinram has used foreign workers from Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Ukraine

I think they all weny to NewYork, some went to Baltimore and some went to virginia, texas, etc. I met with several of these workers at social security office. they were planning to flee away as soon as their social security were issued to them. They were living here in a miserable condition. Most of them were from rular part of Nepal( i forget the name of the place). Forget about english ,some of them were even not capable to speak proper nepali. They all had a loan back in nepal. Some payed 20 lakh some payed 10 lakh to the agent just to come to usa.
At sindram , they were payed 8 pr hr and 12 for overtime. but even though their expences were pritty high. the driver used to charge per person $30 per week to give them a ride. their land loard used to charge them $300 (as far as i can remember) per month excluding utility and water bills. Ofcource grocessary expence is seperate. And their visa was only for 7 month. So how they gonna pay off their debt in 7 month with all those expences? I am not surprised that they disappeared from Alabama, over night. Good luck to them.

There's no word called "Wrong" in Nepali culture. Everything is right,
and we accept everything without looking at the future and the
consequences. We sympathize everybody for all the wrong thing they've
done even when we know it's wrong. The guys who disappeared are
right..."Bichara,What would you do in that situation?" will be the question.
The Indian guy who made money is right too, "What would you do in Nepal
to live, everybody is crooked?" will be the question.I see "Good Luck" being given to them instead, BRAVO. Good way to support and take care our our fellow country people.
So who exactly is "Wrong" here. Oh! I get it it's ME. You'll be
criticizing me now for raising all these questions. Pathetic values and
beliefs.

Just imagine, if the us government tracks about their whereabouts. Unlike students or others working against the law, these candidates are pretty different I assume. Well, this again will post wrong impression of nepalese amongst the US consulates. I don't blame these people also but who to blame?

Bob Marley,
The way you put it, i think it is a very good angle from where we could analyze this issue. We all do what is good for us and benefit us. If i were one of them, i would do the same too you know. No education, loans back home, shitty job with less pay and limited visa; what else can one do in that situation. Six years back, one of my friend (way smarter and talented than me) who came with me, had to be out of status and leave university since he could not pay his tution. If my friend who is an educated person is desperate enough to do this, i think those people dissapering from Alabama is obvious. And if anyone comes here and says "These people put our nation's pride in risk", then FU(K THAT SHIT bro.

This news is somewhat misleading to me. If they are hiding, obviously they cannot run away with furniture worth thousands of dollars.

i agree with poon hill. i dont think most of us here think about other nepali or country when doing illegal things. it is disgusting to see some post who says they made look nepali look bad. put yourself on their shoes first. i agree that whatever they did can not be said good, but they had to do it. with so much loan on shoulder, what else can he/she do? they did that to survive, they were not criminal, they were just looking for better opportunity to pay all debt and make some money to send back home for their family. there are millions of illegal here from mexico and other countries. they were naive to pay that much of money to that guy, which was their huge mistake. now they are here, they go to do something ...this is also because of people like us who are here in usa and do not tell the reality back home. people back home think that there are dollars all over the usa, however in reality life is equally tough here and 15 lakhs nepali is a huge sum and takes a long time to earn even in usa. i would not blame those poor guys. we all gotta survive.

I made couple of people here in LA... and even hooked
up them in work . .. tough
that they paid like 17 lakh and with debt ..
when they gonna make that money ... atleast two years
if they work out hard .. and dont speak english either .. .
. but stilll hard to get a job .. and they had
thought they would made atleast 2lakh a month and by 12 months they
would clear up their debt .. .. 2lakh = more than
3000$ .. . wrong thinking wrong concept ..and wrong message
had lead them up . .. . but they do have to move away
from alabama ... where they get 40 hrs a week per 8$
and how much they can save . .. atleast in LA, TX, Ny
. .. or anywhere .. if they work hard . .. they would be
capable . ..

I don't understand why the company hires them and give the visa for only 7 months. What are they trying to prove?I mean if the company hires workers from a country like Nepal which is way far, issuing the visa for mere months doesnot make sense. Its not like the case of Mexico and Puerto Rico where they hire the workers for a season and its over....its damn way far, another part of globe. And they know literary how much money and time a woker should devour to come this country. This pisses me off.Its like a girl letting a boy to play with her body parts for 5 min and all of a sudden inhibits saying its not moral. What would a girl expect who let some guy to play with her body parts for a time period?A F**CK.For me if that guy rapes her, thats not a crime..thats wat she deserves.
So, guys they did sth wrong but that is justifiable...

poon hill.....ur arguement seems reasonable but also incomplete. I think you are being emotional when commenting about it. Provoking such attitudes towards the one who disobey's law and puts one's sovereignity in stake will foster criminal mentality. Even there was a point in my life where America was a bitch, I felt like quitting my job and get money from looting, but did I do it, no?
When it comes to your identity in stake you need to think logical and discourage illegal activities. My view only!!

spreadlove, thanks for commenting. I am totally aware of the point you are taking. But when one's human basic needs are in risk, it becomes a totally different story.

poon-hill, 8 dollars an hour is not bad for the basic needs. Its just because we expect more. Thats why crime happens.

Guys, as I've said before I'm the one to be blamed, not those who ran away and the Indian guy in KTM. If you think it shouldn't be me, then who is? There got to be someone. WHO? PoonHill, why not we bring everybody here? is that the solution? Is that going to solve all our problem back home? Like you defend these people, the same way the relatives, supporters and the family of each and every corrupt person in Nepal do the same. "We're poor, we've to pay for this..that, everybody is doing it, why not me and all sort of never ending EXCUSES". When there's no acceptance or realization of RIGHT with WRONG, there will be lawless and the society will eventually fall apart, exactly what's happening in Nepal right now, because our old fart ancestors didn't understand this simple logic. Well they might have, but didn't act on it. Doesn't matter. Our culture promotes corruption, lies, wrong and illegal activities and we don't care about it, never did and never will. "nation's pride in risk" pride ??? Is there anything left? It's not about pride, it's about "RIGHT" and "WRONG" I understand the situation in Nepal, but you think you're helping them by saying "Good Luck"? Think again, beside all that, you're also trying the encourage more people to leave our already crippling nation. And again, you can go ahead and blame me.
