We should be proud that Nepal has such a singer as Udit Narayan. That was what I used to think at least. But reading his interview in www.expressindia.com, it makes me feel how low our dignity as a country has fallen. No, I do not blame Udit Narayan. It is his rights and enjoyment not to claim Nepal as a home. I feel great that at least he claims to have got initial training in KTM (he called the trainers "local directors"). Citizenship changes, but not your birthplace. Mithila is a city in Janakpur, I believe. Mithila was a state back then some centuries ago, but Udit Narayan was born not a century ago. It is a living loss to Nepal. Some how I can't help thinking all good people claim to be not from Nepal, but those stinking ones come back and run for municipality. Why do we stink, why does Nepal stink? This should give us all Nepal a motivation: not to force a Nepali to be a non-nepali. Partly it is our failure to embrace the different peoples of Nepal totally. The ruling classes in Nepal should learn a lesson, especially in these hours of turbulence, from this interview alone. It is not Udit but the ruling classes and all intellectuals in Nepal who should learn Nepal. To be honest, I also got my important job in my life in Mumbai, thanks partly to which I came to the US. I liked Mumbai, felt like people there are nice and I can actually understand Udit Narayan. Mumbai was my hometown too, but I guess I was still a Nepali. Just a thought!

as the title means to say he talks again to confirm he's not nepali but not he sings again to tell that he's not nepali.

Mithila nagar is in Janakpur and his village is Bhardaha, by the bank of Sapta-Koshi River. He could lie to the whole world but I wonder how could he face himself? I'm not surprised when he said he is from Bihar because only Indians are qualified to get Film Fare award which he craved so much. But, I feel sad when he doesn't mention his first wife who was taking care of his parents until a couple of years ago according to reports. Since his parents are said to be moved to Mumbai I wonder about her fate. I wish he had personal quality as good as his voice.

I don't care what he says. We're probably no different than him coz' we are ready to accept the citizenship here provided given a chance (we've to give up nepali citizenship once we accept another citizenship as Nepal doesn't allow for dual citizenship). Regarding Siddartha Gautama, at that time Nepal didn't exist. It was divided into many smaller kingdoms. Moreover, he doesn't believe in the whole theory of country. So for him, he doesn't care about this concept of country, even the country that he was supposed to be king. For him, all the countries are same. So, there's no way to compare this case with that of siddartha gautama.

Udit Narayan Is A DISGRACE!!! Why is he so ashamed to admit that he is nepali? Nepal inspite of its current situation is still a country filled with rich culture, heritage and centuries of history. It is understandable to appreciate Mumbai for giving him fame, but to basically deny being completely Nepali, he is saying that although this biodata might suggest that he has links to Nepal, in his heart he never considered himelf Nepali. I never was a fan or cared much about him. Why should we emulate some Bollywood playback singer and be proud of him? Bollywood produces the lowest quality of motion pictures in the world. He is nobody. Mother Nepal doesn't need him, she never did.

Please let's not become too sentimental. How will we consider the baby born in US and is unable to speak in nepali? No matter whether he denies or accept, indians do look at him coming from Nepal. Everyone has their right to speak. The irony is that he got so called GORAKHA DASCHIN BAHU PADAK and he accepted it. I don't know under which category he got it or under which category he accepted it. If it's simply for singing nepali songs in nepali movies, why didn't other indian singers of nepali movies didn't get that award too?

Kiwigal, I won't mind myself being addressed as bahadur. Bahadur mean brave. Many of us have middle name as bahadur. It doesn't matter what people call to you if you've got higher self-esteem.

Yes, Udit talks as dual citizen himself as before, this is because of his employment condition in India. Even here in US, if you have oppertunity to get US citizenship, you won't miss it. As I personanly met him during one music function in US, he is really and still nepali. There were not more than 10 Nepalese in a big hall, he sang a Nepali song in that huge India crowd for those 10 Nepalese. He even called all Nepalese to meet him personally at his hotel. During conversation with him, he told they speak Nepali in his home(Mumbai), and talked about the long way from R.R Campus to Mumbai.

Haha...The thing with this Bahdur stuff is that, "Bahadur" is a stereotype used for nepalis working as security guards for rich people or as their cheuffers in India. When Indians tell me that lots of nepalis are drivers and watchmens in India I say that lots of Indians are watchmans and taxi drivers in the U.S....I don't understand why he would accept the gorkha dachin

Why are we so concerned if Udit is Nepali or Indian? Why do we expect him repeatedly claim that he is 100% Nepali? Does he have to garland his Nepali passport around his shoulder to show that he is Nepali? In the said article, there is noting wrong quoted that implies that Udit is not Nepali. When he says that he is from Mithila Nagari, what’s wrong in this? The area (of Nepal and India) that speaks Maithili language is called Mithila. Nepal and India shares open border and people living in the border areas speak the same language, shares the same cultures, tradition and cross-border marriages are very common and in fact these people really care whether they live in Nepal side or India side. Many of them still do not have Nepali citizenships or Indian ration card and we elite class of people really do care about them. Udit’s mother is from Bihar side. In Terai, women go to her natal home to give birth of the baby and so Udit was born in Bihar where he spent his teen age before he came to Kathmandu for struggle. So, his mother is Indian and he was born in India and so it’s obvious for Udit to say that he is half Indian. As Bombay became his “karma thalo”, of course he has feelings for India and Indian people. We Pahadiya Nepali always treat Terai people as Indians. In our eye, all barbers or vegetable sellers or scrape collectors are Indians. When a vegetable seller comes to our door, we speak with him in broken Hindi “ ए मधिसे,आलू का कति पैसा है ??” When he says”,हजुर, म नेपाली हो, नेपालीमा कुरा गर्नुस न ” , then we would say, "तलाई फटाह धोती i”. Although he is Nepali, we try to prove him Indian but when some names like Udit Narayan comes, we try to test his honesty again and again. So far Udit is concerned, he is victim of either sides. His critics and contenders in India always discriminate him as a foreigner and where as in Nepal, we blame that Udit became Indian. But Udit has not yet abandoned Nepali passport yet. At one interview in Kathmandu, he even produced his passport to the media. American Nepalis have already lost the ground to charge Udit of being an Indian.

I get the point Mr. Once In A while, the jist of my argument is that why waste our breaths on his liveliohood. It is not difficult to come out and say, hey look I made my career in India, but I am nepali and appreciate nepal. It is sad that to defend himself from discrimination, he has to say that "technically'' he is not completely nepali.

When Udit Narayan was working in Radio Nepal, people would call him "bihari." During his singing rehersals in Radio Nepal, he used to get hassled by nepalese colleagues who use to say "oye, behari, chadai mike agadi aayera, tero geeta siddha." And now these same nepalese want him to admit his nepalese background. Are nepalese so shallow to draw some pride and recognition from someone popular by trying to have something common with him?
