Can you also please give me some surnames as an example. This is totally for educational purpose so racist ppl stay away.

From what I know, there are mainly three strands of Brahmin in Nepal

Upadhaya, Kumai and Jaishi..

Don't know how accurate this is, but my great grandmother (who is no longer alive) told me when I was a kid that Jaishi Bahuns started off when someone in the Kumai (or Upadhyaya) clan married a widow..

As far as I know, there are two categories of bahuns in Nepal. 1. Kumai: they hail from kumaon and garwhal area of nowadays india. They are of khas origin. Surnames: prasai, bhetwal, regmi, lohani, bista, bhatta, panta, kharel, sitaula, sedhai, upreti, oli, Sangraula, Mainali, shiwakoti, etc. There are plenty of kumai bahuns in wester part of nepal and jhapa.
2. purbia: these are nepalese hill bahuns. Most of the common bahun surnames like dahal, khanal, bhattarai, koirala, subedi, ghimire etc fall on this category. They are resident of eastern and mid regions of nepal.

Upadhyaya and jaisi are two ranks in both bahuns. Upadhyaya are regarded as purer and permitted to practise karmakand while jaisi, descendants of a upadhyaya bahun and a widow woman, are believed to be degraded and are not permitted to practise karmakand.

Both jaisi and upadhyaya have common surnames. Beside these two, khatri (offsprings of a bahun man and a chhetri woman) and Hamal (child of a bahun man and a thakuri woman) have the same bahun surnames. However, castewise khatri and hamals fall into chhetri category.

From what I know Brahmins have 3 tiers:
Upadhyaya
Kumai
Jaisi
As for surnames, Sharma and Upadhyaya are Upadhyaya Brahmins. Rest of the surnames are shared equally by all.
Some Upadhyaya Brahmins write 'Upadhyaya' after their name to indicate they are Upadhyayas even though they have different surname e.g. Shailendra Kumar

Please stop such research which does not benefit anyone. U may be trying to match caste to max. level for someone's wedding. I beleive there is only a caste in Nepal, i.e. NEPALI!!!!!

I do not know about Kumai bahun at all. but in other bahun.. jaisi are santan of those who were not married in  a proper way. Like, of from widow remarrying, lyaiteh, and whatever other non-typical 'kanyadaan' marriages.

BTW:-  My thread was not intended for that purpose, but if that is the only thing you can infer then it is your problem not mine. If you read the opening of the thread I soooo you(and your type) away in the very begining.

From my side the thread got all the answers it was looking for. Thanks all for your input.
