Depends on what you want. These are the best ones on the market. If you want windows and dont want the mac tax go with Toshiba Portege. Its a very good laptop.

i hate macs because there is very limited options and flexibility. you will never learn how to USE your computer if you own a mac.
i don't know about all other pcs, but let me tell you, don't ever buy HP, they are not reliable, neither are they durable. i own a dell studio xps and i love it. it's been 2 years since i brought it and still runs like a champ. plus, dell's customer service is excellent. example: my lappy slowed down a lil bit, they gave me new hard disk, a plastic decoration on the side of screen got misaligned a lil bit and they replaced the whole screen with a new one!
go for dell (cheap and good), or sony (expensive and good).

Bro ! Jun liye paani baalai ho.. buy anything less than $400. Get something like 4 Gigs of RAM; 320 Gigs Harddrive,, i3 - i5.. and some graphics card if you wanna play some game.. HDMI 4 sure.. if you wanna watch some pirated movies.. I know you would...
Remember.. life of laptop is 4 year.. next laptop.. after 4-5.. so.. don't spend a forture buying top notch one..

Macs dont have limited flexibility. It can be a lil sophiticated when you use it for the first time, but considering that os lion is being lauched this july gives you a lot of options to explore e functionality of your fingers. Its expensive but its sooo worth it. I never had any problems or even had to purchase a new battery in 5 years or so and it was a refurbished one that i had bought for 799. Dell, acer are the worst out there. Do not even consider buying a dell inspiron, these mofo die a day after they run out of warrenty.

i recently bought a 15.6 inch toshiba with 8 gb ram, 750 GB hard drive, Intel core i5 2.67ghz processor, blu-ray player+dvd writer, wi-max, 2 MP webcam for $659 + tax. It was a father's day deal though. You might have to pay quite a bit more for it now.
I don't like macs becoz they implicitly charge u a ridiculously high premium for software and design rather than the things that matter the most: hardware specs. You won't get a mac with the above configurations at even double the price that I paid.

Bottom line is size of wallet and deal. If your wallet permits for for Mac esle look for deal.
Techbargain.com
dealnews.com
deal2buy.com
fry's.com
Last week they had Lenovo I3 4 gb Memory and 500 gb HD after mail in rebate 279.99 arrived 10/15 minutes late, all were gone.
Now a days most computer comes with 4 gb memory and unless you use program that consumes more memory or you use game.
Keep your eye on this site, you may find a deal.
Good luck

I wouldn't go with Mac. I would rather buy decent PC for half the price. Mac kinnu bhanda ta Windows PC kinne ani 3 barsa ma feri arko kinne. (Mac cost you a lot for nothing much, i know they are sleek)
Anyway, Don't buy HP, they use cheap material and customer service is very lousy. Dell is alright and have good customerservice. Sony is good computer but dont expect much from computer service, I mean they will do repairs if needed but will charge you, Money enough to buy new laptop.
Gateway, Compaqs are crap.
Owened and used all of above mentioned brands, is tellling my personal experience. Last week I opened my HP laptop to fix some internal components........ gosh...... They use so cheap materials, they look really flimsy inside.Almost every HP battery dies way before 1 year and they dont cover this under warranty.
Never owned Toshiba, Acer or Lenovo, so no comment.
If i had to buy another one from my above list, I would choose Dell, one more time not the inspiron though.

I used to have PC laptops (Acer Aspire, before that, IBM Thinkpad). They were fine. Then I got Macbook Pro about two years ago. Though it cost almost 50% more, I am very happy with the switch. Mac just feels right.
Feature by feature, spec by spec, I am sure you will find a PC laptop cheaper. Similarly, Android phone too might be better and cheaper than iPhone. But once you start using Apple, or rather once you take a bite of Apple, you will not want to stop using it. There's something about the intuitive design, the robust OS, the all encompassing ecosystem, and just the sheer feeling of owning an Apple product.
Steve Jobs, you devil!
