I CRIED WHOLE NIGHT

----------------

I happened to hear the news: “Five soldiers were killed in an encounter with the Maoists in Jajarkot; the great heroes who sacrificed their lives for the motherland are ...and Bal Bahadur Thapa of Syangja”.

Bal Bahadur Thapa of Syangja? The name pinched me somewhere and I felt wobbly and dizzy as if my blood had iced up. The news shocked me. He was the same Bal Bahadur with whom I studied for six years at school. Immediately I recalled my pathetic yet very romantic school life shared with him. We used to call him Bale. Meanwhile, I remembered his old parents in the village. I could not imagine their wretched situation. How had they been able to hear such a heartbreaking news? The person who was with us has turned into dust and ashes. Isn’t life a strange phenomenon?

Bal Bahadur was a very close friend of mine at school. We were three, including Krishna, who was quite active in everything and was a bit rebellious, whereas Bale was noble, simple and easy-going. We three were always together so much so that we shared the same bench for four years from standard seven to ten. Sharing tiffin, bunking classes, going for swimming in dirty rivers and playing hide-and-seek formed our daily schedule. Life really was amazing. We used to dream together of becoming doctors, engineers, drivers, lahures, heroes and what not. I still remember how we fought on the river banks, imagining ourselves as heroes and villains of Hindi movies.

As time began to fly, we passed out from school and the path of our life was inevitably different. Krishna and Bale joined local campus and I headed for India. Friendship remained a sweet memory, although we were in touch through letters. After two years as I returned to the village. There were unexpected twists and turns in our lives. I was very much eager to hug my dear friends and reminisce our old naughty activities but times have changed. And so have we.

Bale was the only son of their parents and a great hope for them. He had joined the army to fulfil his parents’ dream to replace the straws of his roof with a blazing sheet of tin. On the other hand, Krishna had become a comrade after joining the Maoist outfit.

More to come..........

I met a guy in a flight once and he told me that he is going to Malaysia to work with a loan of 1 lakh. His fae was so pale and sad. He also told me that he is a Nepalese army and he had to fled away becasue they only post him to the rural areas where there is a lot of Maoist threat. Most of his friends were already dead and he was too scared to continue?

Amazing, i understand your tears and sometimes you feel so very angry with the system and people that is only oppressing the poorest in our society. I mean what about their life, emotions and feeling? they have to run here and there like animals.

I really hope your friend's parents will be ok .

For me Human casuality whether it be Bal Bahadur Thapa or any other irrespective of profession, sex, caste, religion, ethenicity, education, health, nobility is same. With this regards, I can only say that already thousands of Balley died for nothing.

And thats bad.

Recap.........

Bale was the only son of their parents and a great hope for them. He had joined the army to fulfil his parents’ dream to replace the straws of his roof with a blazing sheet of tin. On the other hand, Krishna had become a comrade after joining the Maoist outfit.

I CRIED WHOLE NIGHT-II (contd.....)
------------------

It was more than four years I had not met them. They could not come to village because of each other’s fear. Last time when I met Bale’s parents they said that Krishna’s people forced their son to leave the army. And when I met Krishna’s sister she said he is out of touch for the last couple of years and said that he was promoted to area commander and living somewhere in Nepalgunj. I wonder what is in store for all of us.

How could one friend kill another? It is not easy to believe that the persons who used to share the same plate and same bed are standing against each other with weapons. For what and whom? Often, I ask myself what has he got by being so-called martyr. Are we humans worse than animals? Similarly, Krishna does not dream for tomorrow and has no more aspirations, as he knows that his life is just like a bubble on the lotus leaf. He must be ready to die at any time and say “goodbye”.

Many a time we wonder what is that factor which has been alienating one Nepali from another. I could not believe how things changed dramatically.

Remembering the school days, I went through an emotional and nostalgic rollercoaster and could not help glancing at an old snap. We three were there—so innocent and intimate. Bale was in the middle of us holding two of us tightly, tears fell down from my eyes and paid tribute to him silently. I wish to see them in dream tonight.
Wish me luck.

The End

so sad story, but reality is that this is becoming the story of every one's-- yours, his, theirs, but NOT mine so far ...

i also have very good friends in police forces holding smart positions and some in maoists. so far, every incidence has been skipping them and wish they all, including every one, will be safe whomever they work for.

Amazing,
Thanks for your effort to illuminate the political quagmire that has caused havoc to our land and has deteriorated our social structure. How many Bales have we lost in the name of civil war all over the world! How many are still to be sacrificed?

ARE WE ALL EQUALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING THE PLIGHT THAT OUR COUNTRY HAS BEEN GOING THROUGH?
