I would like to appreciate the courage demonstrated by Shivani to speak up against the wrong doings by the Maoists n the govt. officials.

Atleast she proved her innocence n burned down the self centeredness of Maoists, if they could feel it.

Thanks a lot for starting this thread sense. I wanted to discuss this with someone.

I think Shivani's response is a joke. She is seeing everything is a wrong perspective. Here is why I am saying so.

She said she wanted to go to maoist affected area for her college research. She says she was warned against doing so, but she wanted to research the 'plight of women in war afflicted zones'. A very good start.

But what did she expect when she was heading out there? That she would be treated like a supermodel and be given a nice red capet walk around the maoist affected districts? That she would be gracefully allowed to observe maoist's atrocities and write her neat little paper on how brutal the maoists are and how bad the state of women are there and blah blah? I think maoists did the right thing. The showed her the state of women firsthand. The showed her how innocent people are charged of crimes they have not committed and then punished. They showed here how there is no chance of ordinary people voicing their resistance or even mere opinion. They showed her what fear meant and how maoists are using fear to rule people. They used all the tricks they used to lure innocent people to their traps. They invited her for a 'kurakani' and then held her in captivity. They did not pretend to be something else in front of her, they showed her who they were. and after that they released her. She should have been thankful that she was not tortured, raped or killed. And now i think she has a very good idea of who maoists are and they have provided her sufficient information to write a really good research paper, which might even deserve an A+.

But instead she makes all this hue and cry as if she is the only victim of maoist's accusations and starts blaming this and that.

Allow me to point out that regardless of what one thinks of Shivani (people may like her; they may not, and either response to her is fine), it is her and ALL Nepali women's
BASIC RIGHT -- and NOT some Maoist-awarded or some state-endowed privilege --
to be able to live in Nepal without worrying about being "tortured, raped or killed."

That is why, it's really short-sighted to argue that Shivani or anyone else should be "thankful" to the Maoists or even to the state forces for not being tortured,
raped and killed. [Even the laws of war do NOT sanction such acts.]

I read the article, and I found that the issues Shivani has raised are well worth pondering over, and are NOT to be dismissed on account of her supposed
foolhardiness to visit those places for her college paper.

I agree that it is a brave act to go to that area to do research and not just search for materials online BUT it is not ok when you get what was in store for you and complain about it. Let me clarify that. Lets suppose i want to do research on snakes. I can just read about them or i could actually get a live snake and study every part of it. I AM brave to get a live one, or even enter a cage of live snakes and start studying them. BUT it is extremely childish of me to start crying when one of them bits me ( just like it has been biting everyone else everyone in there) Everyone looking at me from outside the cage would say "KE KHANA SARPA LE TOKCHA BHANNE THAHA PAUDA PAUDAI TYAHA BHITRA GAYEKO TA?"

Morever, i think it was a bit of arrogance on her part that just because she is a model and a tv star and a daughter of prominent politician in Nepal, she would get any different (and better) treatment. Ani arko kura ke ho bhane, maathi ashu le bhaneko jasai, ma pani manchu ki nepali women and any other women in the world should not have to live with a fear of being tortured, raped or murdered. I wholeheartedly agree with that. But then I also agree saying that people (men or women) should be able to live without fear of such kind. Innocent people should not be killed. Children should not be hurt (or be made to carry guns for that matter). Old men and women should die their natural death. BUT has that been going on in Nepal? No. And didn't Shivani know that? Yes. Then? what i meant was that although it is shivani's right to live free from fear and not be hurt, given that maoist's have such a bad record of torturing their prisoners and murdering them, she should be thankful (if not to maoists then to God) that she was able to get out of it relatively unharmed. What do you think?

Let me be clear in one way or another ...we r here talking of a well known model n violent rebels.
It is indeed a fault of ms Shivani Singh Tharu to go over there without imagining the consequenses. But what abt Maoists... isnt it a perfect example of their brutality especially when they cry that they r not terrorsits but a political party.
Lets forget abt Shivani being a model for a time being on the basis that she was there as a student to work for a research paper.How abt their treatment to a student

I would better say that Shivani made her bold effort to step up infront n speak her mind, ofcourse media would help her doing so becoz of her backgrounds but the truth is her voice can bring remarkable changes which may help students or any innocent people.
The only Problem here is the maoist who have been blinded with thier arrogance , to decide that its a real fault trying to destroy a wasp hive is like turning blindfolded eyes on..... where the hive actually is?? ..in our room or back there in a jungle.

harke dai and cardinal bro, u have to give credit to shivani for whatever she has done.. testo ta nabhanum na hai. what can u expect from a kid who has been living in brick houses and decides to go and conquer the jungle? ofcourse! she will get lost, and she will complain . BUT when she is complaining she is exposing and teaching 1000 of unkown things to other kids similar to her, (which are probably the half of the young generations of nepal) who also reside on those brick houses.
